Hey Everyone,
This is the Final piece I did for my Painting 1 class. The assignment was to do an Alter Ego Self Portrait. I decided to make a White version of me. The Alter Ego represent my dark side, because I have been labled as a black man trying to be white in the black community. It was hard for me, because I carry myself respectfully as an intelligent, humble, nice, and positive person, but what people who have an ignorant mentality say "You ain't white! Why are you trying to come across you better than me?" It's sad that ignorant people think that way. But this is the darkness I always face ever since I was in seventh grade. So What I did here is I painted myself as a white guy, and leave my eyes to my eye color brown, to symbolize struggle between my identity. The evil malicious look is the look for struggle and I did the background he light pthalo Green to make the Aurora or Mist to make come across that it is sucking me in the darkness. I wanted to do this piece, to tell all the wonderful and positive people, don't let your dark side get the best of you. We all have a darkness we have to battle, and remember to love yourself always. To all the deviant friends who have been watching me for a while, thank you for your support and keep doing your Artwork. I'm listening and if you need help fighting your dark side, I'm here for you. I have nothing but love for ya'll Much Love, Keith Media: Oils, #10 Filbert Brush, #10 Flat Brush, #6 Fibert Brush, #1/2 Flat Brush, Paint Thinner, 36''x36'' canvas on wood, 2 weeks of Hard work Commentsi think this pic is really intresting.
i hate when stupid people think theres a way to act for every ethnic,i swear stupid people and their stereo types.i dont think ive ever understood why people tell people they are acting like something else based on stereo types and nothing else its a really cool pic! and if people cant see that you are you then thats their problem and its a shame that they would so shallowly label people -- I'm weird...So I apologize in advance if me being ...well me...offend's your ass in any way INTEGRA IS [link] to all you people finding me by the way. I know how ya feel. Me and my closest friends have all been accused of trying to be something we're not. My friends are accused of trying to be white and all of us have even been threatened sometimes. I'm white myself, but I'm called horrible names by others just because I don't want to be ignorant like them. I have stood up for my friends just as they have stood up for me. I'll tell you something my mom told me when I was younger and beginning to be bullied because of my beliefs. "Be who you are and never let anyone tell you different".
Much love, Ankhu -- "It's better to be crazy, than boring" Up up, down down, left right left right! Bringin the mother fucking death by Konami! --- Jan Valentine Check out my gallery [link] Oh, by the way.
Nice pic, dude -- "It's better to be crazy, than boring" Up up, down down, left right left right! Bringin the mother fucking death by Konami! --- Jan Valentine Check out my gallery [link] yeah thats really terrible, how even some black people want to label us, as ignorant thug types, like we cantdo any better. But yeah, the concept is great, and i think you nailed the expression.I think i would loved to see you nail the likeness a bit more, but talking from personal experience, i kno how hard tha can be, especially with paints. great stab at it keith, just keep on painting buh-ddy!!

Critiques
I agree with the previous critique that you could've played with the shadows on your skin a bit more. Try looking at some photography or looking in the mirror with some interesting lighting going on. You said in your description that you also wanted to depict a struggle between your inner darkness and I think playing with the shadows could've really helped portray that as well.
I don't personally agree with the previous critique's comments on your features. Afterall, you still want people to recognize that it's you.
I do agree that one of your eyes is larger than the other and while I would normally pass that off as perspective, it would've been the other eye to be larger (the viewer's right).
Overall, I think this is tackling some very personal, deep issues and the attempt to visually tackle and communicating those issues is a brilliant idea. That's why I think this would make a great project for an entire class because it forces introspection (right word there?).
Overall, a very beautiful image and I *love* the relation to the soul and identity. Great work, Keith.
Plus even though you gave yourself lighter skin your features are still black.Plus your right eye is slighty bigger than your left.
Don't worry about what stupid people say. me and my husband went through the same thing and we're both black. There's to many people who don't have love and respect for themselves. So they take it out on the next person. Sad uh?
But this is a really cool piece here.
